Hosting A Town Cleanup Competition

If you wish to help beautify your town by cleaning up excessive debris that is littering public areas, consider coordinating a group activity to carry out this task. It is not that difficult to make a plan in getting the material up and off the streets, and your neighbors will be appreciative of the efforts your group has displayed. Here are some instructions to use when hosting a town cleanup event.

Inform The Public

Hold the event as a friendly competition to see who can collect the most refuse. Use social media or make fliers to hang around town informing the community of your intentions. List a phone number to allow others to call to find out details. You may be surprised at how many people decide to give some of their time to help. Set up a time and meeting place so everyone will be able to enjoy cleaning together as small teams.

Have Supplies

Ask people coming to help to bring a pair of heavy-duty gloves to protect their hands while picking up debris. Provide garbage bags for everyone helping to put the debris in as they find it. Consider using dark-colored garbage bags for household junk and light-colored bags for recyclable materials. Hand out stickers and a marker to each team. Have them write their team name on the stickers and have them stick one on each bag so keep track of their progress as they collect garbage. Make sure to have beverages available to give to participants, as they will need to keep hydrated due to the energy they are exerting.

Use A Truck

Keep all extra materials in a pickup truck to be driven by someone who is not physically able to get out on the road to pick up garbage. They will be able to drive up and down the streets being cleaned to give out garbage bags when people need new ones. The garbage collected can be placed in the bed of the truck.

Make A Drop Off Point

Rent disposal bins from a local waste service. Use one bin for household garbage and another for recyclables. Have the person driving the truck bring all the bags to the drop off point. Stack up the bags in piles according to which group had collected the garbage inside. At the end of the event, have teams count the bags as they throw them into the appropriate disposal bins. Make sure to have prizes for those that had gone above and beyond in their efforts to help clean up the town.
